With the death toll rising so quickly, it might be that high. Hopefully it is that they are working so fast and not reflective of a much higher death toll.

The press conferences are often unnecessary. I know reporters want to ask questions, but chances are in a situation like this there are few questions they can answer that have not already been answered by some other means. Although, if they do this all at once, then they don't have to tell each and every news outlet separately, because TV news wants someone on camera, not a statement. Of course that is a lot of people that have to stand around while it goes on that could be doing other more important things.

I also hate when the reporters bother people like a few are, especially interviewing little children. A reporter asks if you know anyone missing and then tries to prevent the kid from giving the name of a person because at that point the reporter finally has some sense. (The parent in this particular situation also wanted to let family out of state know they are alright.) Although I have seen most reporters keep their distance thankfully, leaving people alone.

As for the width, that is one thing TWC was talking about some. You have the catastrophic damage for a certain width, but then less damage for the outer part of the tornado. I think it might have been Greg Forbes talking earlier about maybe up to a quarter to half mile wide of the worst damage and then maybe up to two miles wide considering the entire width of the tornado. He was not sure though, he was on the ground there and they were not reporting information as quickly as other networks at the time. That is why you have such a range. Some report the most most visible damage as the width and not count the lesser damage further outward.

I have heard various reports about the confirmed fatalities so far at the school. Some have said they were in the basement and some have said in an interior hallway. I had never even considered the possibly of a basement flooding, perhaps due to pipes breaking.
