Chris, I think you have it right all the way....with only infrared sat to go by at night....it only looks like that everything is going north and east.....that's the way these things go....but we have seen our fare share of monster storms in the middle of the gulf intensify and scare the crap out of everyone and we are very fortunate that none of those storms kept their intensity...I am thinking of Wilma and a few other storms that rapidly intensified overnight a few years ago during the same year.
Not to downgrade her many landfalls and eventual landfall...I think there were several storms that year that quickly intensified very quickly and we all did not know what would come next. Wilma did enough to Fla. eventually but showed just how quickly a storm can get its act together.
