When "Weather Radios" Fail you.....

Last night the Lowcountry discovered a shortcoming associated with being "Dependent" on the Weather Radio "Tones".

We were hit with some NASTY thunderstorms; and these were credited with two (as I have heard on the radio this morning) house fires caused by the severe lightning associated with these storms.

The issue was that these storms didnt "qualify" as "Severe" as determined by the NWS, therefore they did not "tone" out to inform the public at large.  To their credit, they did issue several advisories and updates, but there have been reports of many complaints from the locals to the NWS in Charleston questioning why they didnt issue something a little more urgent as it was happening.

Mike D, can you find out how many strikes we had in the Lowcountry last evening (between, say, 7pm and 9pm?)  It was near constant lightning and the thunder WAS continuous for at least 30 minutes.

So, lesson here;  Just because it doesnt "qualify" for severe, doesnt mean it isnt severe.
