But the systems that traveled very far west before developing--most notably Katrina--tended to come along later in the season (Aug./Sept.), no? If somehow this thing can find a favorable upper-level pattern this early in the season as it nears those 86-degree waters in the W Atlantic, it could become a hell of an event--I just don't see how it survives with all the ULL-induced shear that is fairly typical for this time of year, though.
The shear forecast does look moderately favorable, though:
