The amount of moisture in the leaves also makes a difference, as to when they fall. If you get a frost following drought conditions, leaves drop quicker. Moisture keeps them frost resistant, it also keeps the ground temperature warmer - dry ground radiates less heat than moist soil - also why ppl water gardens before a frost
Carolinas are in a bit of a drought:

You really need a cane to watch girl, thinking on leaves dropping a bit too hard
