We were on Kauai in May of 2003 and the damage was still very evident 7 years after Iniki. The Coco Palms Resort where a portion of Elvis's "Blue Hawaii" was filmed was destroyed. We had stayed at the hotel during our first trip to Kauai in 1986. Wonderfully romantic place. The link below has a lot of information about the old hotel.

We were at a kiwi plantation on that trip in 2003 and sat down to talk with a very old Hawaiian woman whose family owned the plantation. She said she was almost 90 and had never experienced anything that frightened her so much. She said she felt that the island would never recover all it lost...
