I was there in 1999 when I was 15, but don't recall anything ever being said about Iniki. I know the Coco Palms was abandoned, but I did not know why. We actually stole borrowed a coconut or two from their grove on the trip and tried to open it and drink the milk. After many attempts we got it open.

I just talked to my dad and he didn't know that was the reason the hotel was abandoned either, though he did know about the hurricane damaging the island. He is a retired pilot and he often flew to Hawaii. We visited there all the time in the late 80's and early 90's.

My dad used to visit the Coco Palms. He and my mother went there. My dad actually loved listening to the Hawaiian wedding song being played there.

I guess I was not there right after the hurricane. Looking at the albums I have scanned in my computer, I was there in Kauai in April 1992. I never did hear about Iniki when it happened. Partly because I was young and didn't watch the news much and partly due to Andrew probably.
