We're in an El Nino year in conjuction with a strongly negative AO/NAO currently. These two combined is creating a pattern in which there are expectionally higher heights and a strongly amplified ridge over the Pacific (due to El Nino) while a strongly negative AO/NAO is the counter part of a postive which keeps the cold air bottled up in the north pole "vortex". So, Big ridge over Pacific is creating a big troughs over the US which allows the cold air to pertrude south.

Climategate was a piss poor attempt at trying to make AGW look like a ploy to take over the goverment. Because that's just what Climate Scientists wanna do, rule a bunch of people who say "its cold, global warming is a hoaz".

Meanwhile, the past two winters have been the most "normal" that I can remember in like at least 10 years. People in Albany NY think this is an unusually cold winter when in reality, it's more like what I remmeber growing up as a child, but several years of above average mild, snowless winters have created the illusion that a "normal" NE is "abnormal". If that doesn't scream the message loud enough from a social perspective, I don't know what to tell ya.
