Another aspect is what sunspots do to the chemical composition of the upper atmosphere.
Sunspots generate large x-ray bursts.
This directly leads to production of O3 in the tropopause.
Higher O3 concentrations push down the tropopause into the troposphere.
CIMSS has had many blogs showing that severe weather events can in induced in some part to a local lowering of the tropopause in conjuction with a cold-core systems.
I haven't seen much literature on this effect with a warm core.
For about the last year, I was trying to get some correlation on this with respect to TC's but satellite data is rather sketchy.
