Check this sat loop this morning. Look at Fl. You see that large spinning dark area--sort of shaped like a U. That's a TUTT. Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough (I believe). Its a giant area of Upper Level Low Pressure. See how the wind dips around the bottom of the U and then turns north right next to where the storms for 97L are located. See how the winds around the U push and scatter the storms off to the N. As long as that TUTT is right next to 97L its got no chance. However this TUTT is beginning to weaken some and move off to the west ahead of 97L into the Gulf. Already its shrunk some in size and is becoming more circular in shape as it curls in on itself and becomes your garden variety Upper Level Low. The TUTT's exist mainly in the tropical oceans (reason for the first T--Tropical). They can be semi-permanent features there--taking on this giant dipping U shape. But as they begin to shift or move--they usually consolidate and shrink some becoming more circular (like this one will) so that they're really not so much of a full blown TUTT anymore--just your basic Upper Level Low. |
