I remember when my Gran came to visit us in Miami.She had never been outside of Charleston WV and wanted to see the Ocean.Sooo.. plans were made ,we got up early,loaded the car(there were 9 of us crammed in that old Plymouth) and headed to Key West.It is a loong trip for a child of seven in a cramped car from Cutler Ridge to Key West.Mom told Gran of fritters and train rides and a slower pace of life that was the Conch Republic of 1960.Finally though we got there,Key West ,the smell of the sea and Jimmy Buffett songs fill my head as I picture it now.
You know that big sign "90 miles to Cuba"? Pop walked up and stood in front of it pointed to his left "look the Atlantic" then pointed right "Behold the Gulf of Mexico" and then "Get in the car were goin home".We were actually on the key for a total of 10 minutes.Gran complained that she didn't even get to take a picture so Pop stopped at the Post Office in Perrine and bought her two post cards......feelin a bit guilty I suppose.
