You've stumbled upon an important truth about society and people in general. In many cases they don't (or choose not to) use the higher parts of their brains. Your ex totally fits. The fact that there might be many storms forming out to sea, storms that don't directly affect our lives here on the coast, means that they don't count. And they don't want to here you say that they do! They will resist you if you say so!! Isn't that incredible. One more example might be related to politics (and I'm going to stay away from a very specific ex). People will have a view about a specific issue. And they rightly want to see a specific outcome with that issue. But they will go along with any path that will give them that outcome. The fact that there are laws and specific procedures to be followed (facts which are at the foundation of our republic) means nothing to them. As long as what they want to happen, does in fact happen. And you can't explain to them the importance of the process or the legal system, no it has to happen with the desired outcome. If you try to explain to them that you sympathize with their position, but you think it more important that the correct process or procedure be followed then they become angry, and think that you must be on the opposite side (no higher order thinking at all).
