There is some confusion about that. Katrina made landfall in SE LA before MS. At that point the advisory intensity made it a landfalling category 4 hurricane in SE LA where there are few people, though best track data was revised a bit downward so I'm not sure if it was or not actually.
The advisory data: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2005/pub/al122005.public_b.026.shtml?
29.7 N 89.6 W (map) 135 MPH
It shows it having made landfall at category 4.
The revised best track data:
28.2N 89.6W (map) 125 knots (143.75 mph)
Then it made landfall between these positions, though since best track data is every six hours, not sure what the speed was at the SE LA landfall.
29.5N 89.6W (map) 110 knots (126.5 mph)
But the big point is that MS did not see a category 4. One thing they said on the Nightly News tonight was something to the effect that New Orleans got a direct hit, I forget the exact wording, but that of course is not true. |
