Bobbi, the last "close call" a major 'cane had with long island that I remember is Hurricane Emily in 1993, which came within 25 miles of Cape Hatteras as a cat 3. Living in Brooklyn at the time, I remember there being some nervousness for about a day before Emily made an abrupt turn out to sea.

After that, the only other major 'cane that got folks nervous in NYC was Hurricane Isabelle. I was living in the financial district in NYC at the time and I remember Isabelle being front page news in all local dailies for a day, before Isabelle plowed westward into VA.

And of course, there is always Hurricane Bob, which was also a major when it brushed LI and new England.
