Good post; thank you. It gets to the point of an e-mail I recently sent friends and family about the "exponentiality" of wind power. That is; that a 125mph wind is not just a little bit more than a 100mph wind, it's a lot more.
The physics of wind is important to engineers and mariners but there's a limit to how technical one can be with the average person on the street.
Most of us are not engineers, mariners, or meteorologists. We're aware their concerns but our day to day lives reflect the generalities of our social environment. it's perfectly fine for us to argue meteorological technicalities here...but make a habit of it with those who aren't weather geeks and one will soon be an outcast.
For those of us who love physics, having conversations on the subject with the average person is almost always a fruitless exercise. Not only does the average person know nothing about the subject; they seem to not even want to know anything about it.
It's been my personal experience that Americans and science go together like oil and water. Unfortunately, physics (effectively the study of reality) isn't required in high school.
Thanks for the reminder, lol.
