Cypress, for those of us in the path of the storm the damage was SEVERE.  Beaumont looked like a war zone.  Cameron Parish was devastated.    

Rita came ashore as a 3.  So did Katrina.  

Biggest difference was New Orleans levees were not built to withstand a surge like Katrina's (or Rita for that matter).  

Also, the news media did not really cover Rita because they were still talking about Katrina.

Many, many people lost their homes in Rita.

My hat goes off to our local officials who did a great job evacuating our area (they also evacuated many victims of Katrina we were housing).  Lake Charles, Cameron, etc. all did a good job of evacuating.  This is the reason more lives were not lost.
