Ahhh....the "good old days" hehe.

Growing up in Montgomery County, Maryland, I remember the pair of "snow tires" that always sat in the trunk of our car until the first forecast of snow...From that point on, it was snow tires on the rear til spring time.

And when a storm was particularly bad, we'd wipe the dust off the heavy chains and put them on the rear tires (a task that is not all that easy.)

Road-clearing is better today (as are the forecasts); and with the spread of front wheel drive, fewer cars on the road get stuck now.

It's been a long, long time since I last drove a car with chains on the rear tires but I can tell you....it's weird and kind of fun. Charging ahead through snow and ice, even uphill, one gets a feeling of omnipotence behind the wheel. It's one of those experiences everyone should at least once have the opportunity to enjoy.
