They covered that briefly in a local news report about the runway change and the birds saying some theorize that birds may internally have a compass that helps guide them, but there is nothing definitive.

I would think migration is more of a learned behavior. Manatees for example that used to migrate south in one area, perhaps it was on the east coast of Florida, may no longer since a power plant stopped operating. The government required that the power company heat the water so that the manatees would not die in the cold waters in case they no longer know how to migrate south.

It does seem like there are a lot of animals that die worldwide in mass casualty events. (from what Cypress posted and reading elsewhere) Perhaps the media is just a little more focused on it lately.
