Who here doesn't remember Comet Hale-Bopp? It was visible to the naked eye from July '96 to October '97.  

Hale-Bopp reached its maximum brightness (magnitude -0.5) in April and was a spectacular sight in our nighttime sky.

Living in Germantown, Maryland then, I'd often take my 10X binoculars and gaze at the comet in awe.
Some evenings there would even be small groups of people standing around looking at our strange visitor. Over time he slowly faded away to nothingness. I was sad to see him go.

I hope we soon get another one like that!
