The NAM model or "North American Model" is a model similar to the GFS except it is a locally run model and thus it is not of the entire planet. However, this allows for more computing power thus a far greater spatial resolution then the GFS. It also does not go out as far as the GFS. The NAM is just not designed for forecasting hurricanes and is toned to focus specifically on the north american region. The NAM is great for operational forecasting in the US/Canada but isn't a model you want to look at for Hurricane forecasts, however it will pick up on the system in it's runs.

The NAM is also only an 84hr forecast model while GFS goes out 196.

Hope that helps Bobbi. If you want a more detialed explanation let me know!
