I will not  get into detail on the NAM model other than to say it is a numerical model, detail would require me to read lots of my old notes to recall it all and I am way too tired for that. One of the problems with the NAM is that it is a very detailed model and can take up to 8 hours plus for it to run.

It very name "North American Mesoscale Model " indicates why it takes so long to run as Mesoscale refers to a measurement of weather down to the sea breeze or squall line level. The actual model used the in NAM has changed over the years but the name has stayed the same. One of the issues with such a detailed model is that by the time the run is complete the input parameters, initializing data, used on a large scale storm could have changed.

Don't quote me on this but I remember one of the problems with Numerical models is that they are so detailed and the files so large that in order to shorten the run times they feed data back into themselves from partial completion of an earlier run. Therefore glitches(off by that much), in regards to large dynamic systems, have a tendency to be magnified
