I thought that it was the opposite.  

I was taught all through school (I grew up in WV) that the Apps are one of the oldest ranges on earth, if not the oldest.  It is one of the reasons (stated) the coal is so shallow.

I could LITERALLY use a pick ax to dig my own coal from my family farm next to our barn; it wasn't 24 inches under ground in some places.

Do you have any links on those studies?  I would like to read them.  Sounds interesting.  It isn't everyday that you learn of something that goes against everything you have been taught...it also isn't everyday that the ground moves, either.
