Steering winds

As I was reading on another board, someone had posted a question about if a hurricane gets strong enough to make it's own steering currents and ignore what is out there trying to steer it? The response was this " Yes but only the extremely strong (Category 5) type storms normally can, but even then they are only in weak general steering conditions."
So I did some digging...
