I largely agree with you. I think, though, that the question is not whether the storm intensifies or weakens--it's whether the warmer gulf stream waters Irene is about to enter into may buttress the storm against the influence of wind shear and help it maintain its current intensity on through the Outer Banks--not weaken or strengthen, but merely hold steady. That could have major impacts on Irene's future intensity as it nears the northeast.

Note the darker shade or orange on this SST map that Irene is just now approaching, and the corresponding flare up of higher cloud tops just NW of the center noted in the sat image I posted in this thread earlier . . .
