If you are right here where Google puts you: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Emerald+Isle,+NC&hl=en&ll=34.663429,-77.00592&spn=0.23325,0.445976&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=56.724997,114.169922&vpsrc=6&z=12 You should seriously reconsider not evacuating. There will be a very significant surge there, especially if the storm wobbles enough so that you are on the east side of the eye wall. The surge will be high on both the Atlantic and inland side of the barrier island. The surge and waves will be very powerful.
I can only think of this image from Hurricane Ike in 2008:

Irene is not quite as bad as Ike, but Ike had either the second highest or highest surge destruction potential of any storm in Atlantic basin in history and Irene has one that currently still equals that of Katrina at its peak and is not far off from Ike. |
