That's because at this time and for much of the evening Irene has been sucking in dry air from your region, west and north of you from the associated trough and cold front that has been steering her north. Therefore convection is dwindling in this region and you're in the one zone where there isn't madness at this time.

Don't let your gaurd down because this one didn't hit. Charleston is fair game for any cane so keep your eyes out. The season is just really now starting and given this ENSO phase transitonal period it seems the east coast may be more prone to landfalling TC's this year.
