I used to work for a news station who had a morning "weather person."  He had no degree.  He just got his info from NWS, Wx Channel and the station's real meteorologist.  I did not initially know that he didn't have the training but began to ask questions when, after some weather-related conversations with him, I found out he was clueless.

The station was always careful in their references to him to say, "And now, weather with (name)" instead of "meteorologist (name)."  He has since obtained his degree but he got away with that for years because he was popular with viewers and (I suspect) because he added to the station's diversity.

I will say that at least one sharp viewer wrote to ask why (name)'s morning forecast sometimes conflicted with the forecast from our station's chief meteorologist who was also heard on morning radio.

If viewers only knew what goes on (or fails to go on) in a newsroom.
