good discussion out of KW tho I would agree it looks like an UPPER LEVEL LOW to me and Florida being on the "dirty side"
Gyre is an interesting word...
Been thinking for a while when the stuff up in the Northern Gulf meets what was the moisture from the wave that never developed that something could fire up a bit...and it seems it is doing that.
.DISCUSSION... THE FLORIDA KEYS AND ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS ARE THE SCENE OF WIDESPREAD CLOUDINESS...SHOWERS...AND THUNDERSTORMS THIS MORNING. ANIMATIONS FROM A GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITE VISIBLE CHANNEL REVEAL RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF VIGOROUS CUMULUS CONVECTION ACROSS THE AREA. A SWITCH TO THE INFRARED CHANNEL ANIMATIONS SHOW CLOUD TOP TEMPERATURES COLDER THAN -70C ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEEPER TOWERS. LOOKING AT YET ANOTHER SATELLITE CHANNEL...THE MOISTURE CHANNEL...ONE CAN DISCERN A SYNOPTIC-SCALE...COLD-CORE GYRE CENTERED OVER THE SOUTH CENTRAL GULF OF MEXICO JUST NORTH OF THE YUCATAN CHANNEL. EMBEDDED WITHIN THIS GYRE ARE SEVERAL MESOSCALE VORTICES SEEN ROTATING CYCLONICALLY. ONE OF THESE CAN BE TRACKED TRANSITING NORTHEASTWARD OVERNIGHT FROM THE YUCATAN CHANNEL TO NEAR THE DRY TORTUGAS. THIS PARTICULAR VORTEX SEEMS TO HAVE INVIGORATED CUMULUS CONVECTION UPON ITS APPROACH EARLIER THIS MORNING. AT LOWER ALTITUDES...THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE EXTENDS WESTWARD OVER CENTRAL FLORIDA AND THE EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO. HOWEVER...A WEAK AND BROAD TROUGH IS EVIDENT IN THE SURFACE-TO-700MB LAYER BENEATH THE EASTERN FLANK OF THE UPPER-TROPOSPHERIC GYRE. FINALLY...AVAILABLE UPPER-AIR DATA SHOW A NEARLY SATURATED AND WEAKLY SHEARED ENVIRONMENT CENTERED OVE |
