This was posted 4 hrs ago....every one of these has hit in the vacinity of Sundays....unbelievable. I bet the pineapple and other crops there are devastated. Also, in these storms a LOT of war items including sometimes live ordance...tons a year... either surface or a washed up. This island was heavily bombed in WWII. They have to be so careful when they do any excavation. Stuff is always being found..including remains from both sides.

Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa

Good morning, Okinawa! Well, the weather on our tropical paradise may be brillig now, but it's shaping up to be a wet and wild weekend as the second Category Five storm of this year starts making its approach. The latest track from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center has Jelawat passing by 17 miles from Okinawa on - wait for it - Sunday morning! OK, it's 2 AM on Sunday morning, but still

Jelawat is one of the two most powerful storms to appear in the Pacific this year, and still posting wind gusts of over 170 knots - but we should start to see some weakening during the next 24 hours as upper level winds start pulling it apart. Our capricious models are FINALLY talking to each other again and starting to agree on SOMETHING; the track is settling down - which means Jelawat is very likely to pay us a visit early next week, though probably a shadow of its former self. Dunkin Doughnuts may even stay open. :)

Stay tuned, stay safe! Stormy
