Yes, that is a lot of rainy days, but as a Tampa resident myself I can tell you it has felt like we've had even more than that. The ground is so saturated where I live that a couple weeks ago water in the parking lot of my apartment complex was lapping the sides of my car as I drove out to the street as though I was driving through a lake. It totally took me by surprise. I didn't realize the water had risen that high until I was right in the middle of it during a downpour.
Local public radio has featured bay area officials and forecasters expressing concern about the possibility that the already-saturated ground will amplify the effects of any tropical system we may get in the months ahead, with flooding and downed trees being more of a problem than a given storm's intensity would indicate. It's almost as if they fear we'd get Cat 1 or Cat 2-type damage from a 70 mph tropical storm thanks to the effects of this exceedingly rainy summer. |
