chasing Haiyan - insane https://www.facebook.com/iCyclone
Given the truly historic severity of Super Typhoon HAIYAN, we've decided against riding out the storm at the beachside resort in Palo and have relocated to a sturdy old hotel right in the heart of downtown Tacloban. But we're still only two blocks from the water (11.241N 125.004E). We're frankly having a hard time envisioning what the conditions will be like here if the inner core of this typhoon passes over us. It's less than 12 hours away now-- and seems to be speeding up. ~ iCyclone
The latest JTWC forecast is kind of amazing to us. The current intensity is an unbelievable 165 knots (190 mph), and the 8 am forecast has the center a few miles ESE of Tacloban and moving right over us with winds of of 150 knots (175 mph). Kind of having trouble processing this. James, Mark, and I are discussing strategy in light of this extreme scenario. ~ iCyclone
Midnight. Light drizzle. Warm and muggy. Calm. 1002.3 mb and falling slowly. Took a walk down a dusty old street to the Bay-- saw people playing pool and just hanging out... as if completely unaware of the frightening force coming in off the Pacific to envelope this old tropical city. I almost don't believe it, either-- it's such a calm evening. Going to sleep for a few hours... ~ iCyclone
