you have to remember that they don't have concrete block houses there like they do in Florida & mountainous terrain will make flash flooding much more of an issue - I don't think it's something for the islanders to take lightly, jmo

.SITUATION OVERVIEW... ISELLE IS NEARING THE BIG ISLAND FROM THE EAST. NUMEROUS GAGES ON THE BIG ISLAND ARE REPORTING SUSTAINED WINDS AROUND 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 50 MPH. CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE RAPIDLY THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
ISELLE WILL BRING HEAVY RAINS...HIGH SURF AND DAMAGING WINDS. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE DEVELOPING ON THE BIG ISLAND THIS AFTERNOON...AND HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TONIGHT. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO SPREAD TO MAUI COUNTY TONIGHT AND TO OAHU AND KAUAI FRIDAY. SWELLS GENERATED BY ISELLE WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL LIKELY BECOME DAMAGING ALONG EAST AND SOUTHEAST FACING COASTLINES...ESPECIALLY ON THE BIG ISLAND. THE HIGH SURF IS EXPECTED TO REACH THE ISLANDS AHEAD OF THE HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG WINDS. THE HIGH SURF MAY BRING COASTAL FLOODING...PARTICULARLY WHEN COMBINED WITH AFTERNOON ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDES. THE THREAT OF COASTAL FLOODING AND PROPERTY DAMAGE WILL BE GREATEST ON WINDWARD BIG ISLAND.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE IN THE SHORT TERM TRACK IS HIGH...PUTTING ISELLE OVER THE BIG ISLAND TONIGHT. ALTHOUGH THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY IN THE EXACT TRACK AND STRENGTH OF ISELLE AS IT MOVES WEST OF THE BIG ISLAND...THE REST OF THE STATE WILL BE AFFECTED...AND ONLY A SLIGHT CHANGE IN THE FORECAST TRACK AND INTENSITY COULD LEAD TO GREATER IMPACTS.
.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
ON THE BIG ISLAND...NOW IS THE TIME TO SEEK SHELTER. ACROSS THE REST OF THE STATE...PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION. IN A HURRICANE...CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE QUICKLY. EVACUATE IF DIRECTED TO DO SO BY LOCAL OFFICIALS...OR IF YOUR HOME IS VULNERABLE TO HIGH WINDS OR FLOODING. PERSONS LIVING NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE QUICKLY SHOULD BUILDING SURF THREATEN.
FOR THOSE NOT ON THE BIG ISLAND...IT IS VITAL THAT YOU DO NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK. EVEN SMALL ERRORS IN THE FORECAST TRACK CAN MEAN MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN WHERE THE WORST CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR. DAMAGING EFFECTS CAN EXTEND FAR FROM THE CENTER.
BE READY TO EVACUATE IF NECESSARY. HEED THE ADVICE OF LOCAL OFFICIALS AND COMPLY WITH ANY ORDERS THAT ARE ISSUED. PERSONS LIVING NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE QUICKLY SHOULD BUILDING SURF THREATEN.
AT PORTS...DOCKS...AND MARINAS...PERFORM THE PRESCRIBED PREPARATIONS ACCORDING TO YOUR EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLAN. IF YOU LIVE ON A BOAT...BEGIN TO SAFELY SECURE YOUR CRAFT AND MAKE PLANS TO LEAVE IT FOR ADEQUATE LAND BASED SHELTER.
