I think a 75mph hurricane with 100mph+ gusts, especially in higher elevations, could be really devastating to parts of the islands if that reached shore. (not that I'm saying that would happen, just as an example) Some areas could also be devastated by heavy rain. Some areas of Hawaii get massive amounts of rain, but some do not. Hawaii has such a varied climate. It also has a lot of areas of high elevation. In the 90's when my dad was an airline pilot we could travel to Hawaii free, so we went a whole lot to Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. While Waikiki Beach, with its large hotels might be impacted how you would expect another place like it to do in a hurricane, much if the islands, beyond the big hotels, would not handle a storm like places in Florida would. Maybe things have changed a lot in the 19 years since I've been there, but I'm guessing the non tourist areas, many areas on hills, remain very vulnerable. Some parts of the tourist areas are vulnerable too. Some weren't built to handle wind, but I'm thinking more about residences.
It took a long time for Kauai to recover from Iniki. Although at least one hotel never did come back and remained abandoned, the Coco Palms Resort, though apparently they might be restoring it in part. I remember that abandoned property when I was there and that was 19+ years ago.
The problem is it's uncertain at what point it will turn, as it is forecast to do at some point, as well as its intensity. That's why they have to prepare now. They don't want to get caught off guard again. I don't know how surge would impact Hawaii. Not knowing, I would assume wind and rain would be the biggest threats since much of Hawaii is elevated. I can't recall how high some of the coastal areas are on some parts of the islands. |
