12Z and 18Z GFS on Sunday both showed Florence making landfall in Newfoundland, perhaps even further west in Canada. Long way out. But definitely showing threat to North America. (including Bermuda)

Euro of course ending it's run in the location you note.
As for where recon happens:
"5.5.1.3.1. For the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and Central Pacific areas, the requests can be: - Up to four 6-hourly fixes per day when a storm is within 500 nm of landfall and west of 52.5W in the Atlantic. - Up to eight 3-hourly fixes per day when a storm is forecast to be within 300 nm of the U.S. coast, Hawaiian Islands, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, DOD installations, and other DOD assets when specified. - Up to two synoptic surveillance missions per 24-hour period for potentially land-falling storms."
I wish NASA had an unlimited budget and could fly the GlobalHawk, which can fly for a day. It could fly across the Atlantic. But that would be from a research perspective. Recon closer to landfall is what is most important. But that would have been helpful to sample around Hawaii when recon had to evacuate the islands for Lane. It could have left from California for that storm. |
