That's a bug in the program. I think it was last month that I spent hours trying to fix that but couldn't figure out how. It's been an issue in that program for a long time, many years, on all the sites that use it. I fixed some other issues with the program but that one remained most elusive.
The best track has not been updated to reflect anything other than 135 knots (155mph) at the peak: http://ftp.nhc.noaa.gov/atcf/btk/bal142018.dat
Category 5 is 157mph (137 knots) or higher. So it remains a 4 as of now.
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php
I believe the HamWeather program (now AerisWeather) issue relates to when the wind scale changed. About that: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pdf/sshws_2012rev.pdf
The scale used to start category 5 at 156 mph (136 knots) or higher. I think due to some rounding issue somewhere a 135 knot storm might be considered 156mph and on the old scale that would be a category 5. I updated all the parts of the system I could find that reflected the old scale and it still didn't fix the issue. There's hundreds of files that run that system and it's in the PHP language which I don't know much about so I couldn't nail down the issue. Maybe in the offseason I will take another look. I didn't want to break anything while there was something going on. I can't duplicate the system easily to test it. I could probably test by faking data late one night for a few hours to try to determine where it gets the values from and then from there try to trace how it ends up where it is. I thought I had but what I tried didn't work. I found out what file the forecast advisory is downloaded in and processed in but my attempts at fixing things there didn't make it work. But I'm not sure where it gets the data from now. For example if I delete the imagery it will be regenerated but at this point it wouldn't get the data from the forecast advisory, it gets it from somewhere else. I wanted to try and see if the data comes directly from HamWeather. I was going to try to write something to intercept anything that comes in at 135 knots, or 156mph, and force it to be category 4 in that situation but I have to find the right line, or lines, of code to do that in. Have to find the right file first. A patch like that would probably be easiest. Just a real simple "if statement" if I can find where it occurs. |
