I didn't think anyone was using it. I worked 24/7 for a few days. Still catching up on sleep. I turned it off this morning and archived the loop of Dorian. I guess I'll turn it back on. I am actually still working on the display. I'm trying to get rid of the flicker and add a slider so you can slide through the images easier. I was going to use the same method on older NOAA P-3 radar data to view in a loop. Current NOAA P-3 data is no longer available on my site because they were still working out technical issues a year ago, but someone emailed me over the weekend about it and I sent an email to the people I talked with last time and asked for an update after the storm if they have plans to make it available again in a format I can use. (But either way I need to update the maps with the older radar imagery and thought now was a good time to improve the display in case I can ever get it again live.) I need to switch from Google Maps to ArcGIS mapping so I don't get charged by Google. Over the weekend my usage was spiking because of the hurricane so I asked Google approval for a second time as a crisis responder to have additional free Google Maps usage. They gave me an additional $250 free each month through, and including, October. They have been good at that so far, but I'd rather not have to ask them every year. If they ever declined, I might be charged because you only normally get $200 free each month. That works out to about 28,000 map loads for the Google Maps model plots. After that, you get charged.
I need to update all the maps that use Google Maps and that will take many months to do. I thankfully did some of the maps before Dorian threatened or my Google Maps usage would have been a lot higher. Someone at Esri (which does the ArcGIS mapping) also wanted to discuss with me this week about making my data available in a format that can be more easily added to other people's maps in an Esri format, rather than just a Google Earth format, but I don't know if I would get to that anytime soon. That would mean a lot of bandwidth usage if I created on my site and hosted it. So I don't know if that will work out. |
