I haven't read all of the National Hurricane Operations Plan (NHOP): https://www.ofcm.gov/publications/nhop/nhop2.htm
But I didn't know some of these things specifically:
"During hurricane season, the NHOP requires the squadron to support 24-hour-a-day continuous operations, with the ability to fly up to three storms simultaneously with response times of 16 hours."
"To accomplish the mission, the 53rd WRS has 10 full-time Reserve aircrews and 10 traditional Reserve part-time crews available to fly the 10 WC-130J aircraft to meet weather requirements."
I know the Air Force has ten WC-130J aircraft, but figured a lot of them aren't as ready to go.
Others might not know about the winter missions.
That article is about the Air Force. NOAA has three aircraft, two P-3's and a G-IV, but a lot of times over the past several years they have only had one of the P-3's available as they have done some extensive maintenance on them. I always knew the Air Force has more aircraft to cover things, but even more than I thought since they have the crews ready too for each one. I guess I figured some planes were just backups and they didn't have a full crew for each ready to go within 16 hours. |
