You started following them at a young age, even if it wasn't until the 90's when you got really interested. I don't ever remember following hurricanes at all before Charley in 2004. That was a potential threat to Tampa and we all had to pay attention here. I was 20 at the time. I think I might have had the day off for hurricane Andrew in 1992, when I was 9, but I'm not sure. Not sure if they would have given schools in Tampa the day off.

I remember the March storm in 1993 having higher tides, but don't remember much else. I had to lookup the year to make sure it was the one you were talking about too.

If something wasn't impacting me, it just wouldn't have been something to easily know about in the mid to late 90s with the internet being really slow at the time. I just don't remember hurricanes being something that people thought about around here, though I was young some of that time. I would have been a junior in high school when Gordon made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida in 2000, but I don't recall anything about it even though it closed the bridge half a mile from me due to storm surge flooding based on a NOAA document I just looked at. I was really naive at the time I guess. I was probably just happy to get the day off from school during any times that school was canceled and didn't think much else about it.
