NHC: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Watches and warnings still haven't appeared properly on imagery on their site since 4pm CDT Tuesday.
Mexico was not prepared for this. This is going to be a disaster.
There was nothing hinting at this from the models until early in the afternoon, and it still blew past all of those.
The forecast 24 hours ago was for it to peak near hurricane strength.
10pm CDT Monday: Intensity at time: 50mph Peak: 70mph
4am CDT Tuesday: Intensity at time: 65mph Peak: 85mph
10am CDT Tuesday: Intensity at time: 70mph Peak: 90mph
4pm CDT Tuesday: Intensity at time: 125mph Peak: 140mph
7pm CDT Tuesday: Intensity at time: 145mph Peak: 160mph
NHC said this in NHC discussion at 10am CDT Tuesday when it was 70mph:
"The SHIPS Rapid Intensification (RI) indices show a greater than normal probability of RI, so some further upward adjustments to the intensity forecast are possible later today."
In 12 hours it went from 70mph to 160mph, at least officially based on advisories. Maybe they will adjust best track data later. They really needed more than one plane. That's it. There was just one flight for this storm.
Last night, 24 hours ago, NHC said this:
"Otis has the appearance of a sheared tropical storm this evening, with the center on the eastern edge of a relatively new burst of deep convection."
24 hours later, it's going to make a direct strike on a metro area of 1 million as a category 5 hurricane, with relatively little warning, and certainly little to none when it comes to this kind of strength. Sometimes this happens I guess, especially with a warming climate, but this is insane. |
