Fiji is bracing for tropical Cyclone Tomas as it approaches the northern coast.

The Fiji Metservice say the cyclone is gaining in strength as it reaches coastal areas on Monday morning, bringing winds of up to 200 kilometres an hour, and 20 foot high waves.

It is expected to hit within the next 24 hours, and will increase from a category 3 to a category 4 as it moves through the Fijian islands.

Schools were closed down on Sunday night and more than 20 evacuation centres have been set up in the northern islands.

Fijilive.com says several towns are already without power.

Meanwhile further west , tropical Cyclone Ului is expected to hit the Solomon Islands on Monday, bringing with it winds of up to 200 kilometres an hour.
