I think I heard somewhere that about 50% of the stars are actually binary.
The ones that aren't most likely have a large H/He planet that just didn't make the gravational threshold to spark fusion.
Why should our solar system be any different?
Dark matter and its gravational effects have in only the last few years really come to the fore-front in astronomical research.
A couple decades ago, the so-called experts then would have told us this was all horsey poop-poop.
