Tim,

Being in the public health feild i decided to re-educate myself on Toxoplasmosis because i know that feline feces is the cause for the infection.  The cats eat rodents or birds infected with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii.  It can also be found in soil contaminated with cat feces. It can also be contracted from eating undercooked meats.  The protozoa can survive up to a year in water or moist soil.   It is recommended to wash hands after cleaning cat litter boxes and to wear a mask.  Treatment is usually Clinamycin with Pyrimethamine combined with sulfa drugs and folinic acid for 4 weeks.  in ocular cases, corticosteroids are indicated.    Most symptoms can mimic those of mononucleosis and generally and blood test is used to identify the causitive agent, but re-infection usully does not occur unless the immunne system become compromised.

I got all this information from The Control of Communicable Diseases Manual (CCDM)
