Dennis' retirement was probably a combo of the Cuba damage and the whacking it gave the immediate coast just south and west of Pensacola, and yes, the big bend damage was mentioned in some of the NHC reports.

Dennis' long storm surge that extended far east of the center was one of the first indications that Cat 4 and Cat 5 storms might lose winds when they weaken, but they don't lose the swell of the Cat 4 and Cat 5.  He should've been a harbinger of what Katrina and Rita were going to bring, but AlligatorPointer is right, at the time it occurred, it was referred to as a rogue wave and not storm surge.
