Re: TWC will name winter storms now...

It's the fact that a private company is doing it is the problem. TWC has really lost it this time. Maybe AccuWeather can have their own list too.

I don't really think they need to be named, but if they do get named it can't be a private company doing it. Will they name fronts? Lake effect snow?

Hurricanes can require large areas of evacuation. It helps to have a name attached. For snow storms you stay inside for the most part. A hurricane can level a lot of people's houses, snow storms not so much. Snow storms can have significant impacts too, but not like the total destruction of a hurricane. A blizzard is coming. A snow storm is coming. I don't think you need an actual name instead. You want to know how much snow you are going to get and/or what other forms of precipitation you are going to get out of it. How long will the snow hang around? How long will it take to get power back? Where is the necessity of a private company stepping forward and saying we'll name them now?

TWC was going off on their own even before the Comcast takeover, but now they are really going nuts. (TWC does their own forecast paths for hurricanes. Or at least they did, I'm not sure if they still do. They have their own tornado index of sorts.) I wonder if the local NBC stations will be forced to use this private naming convention as well. How are they going to explain it? Will storm names be retired? This whole thing sounds like an April Fools prank. We are 6 months away, nearly to the day, from April Fool's Day. I can't wait to see if they actually go through with this. And honestly, the names. Wow. I guess there is little chance of a name on this list every being on the NHC's hurricane list. Snow Storm Ruler (Walda)!

Jeff Masters wrote something on it:

I wonder how he really feels about it.
