Chris, I gotta tell ya I agree with everything you said.  When I read about this earlier today my first reaction was, what do they mean, a "national organization" is doing this?? Are you kidding me??  What makes them a "national organization"??    They're a media outlet, a commercial enterprise plain and simple, and, as others have pointed out, a ratings-hungry one at that.  Now, there's no shame in wanting good ratings -- that is, until you proffer a meaningless and possibly harmful thing like this, making yourself out to be a "national" scientific weather authority.

It would be laughable if it weren't so high-handed and presumptuous --  just as are their own private hurricane track predictions (and  yes, as far as I can see they're still doing that -- I  have to keep reminding my hubby NOT to put stock in their predictions but to come look at the NHC tracks online).

Shame on TWC for taking advantage of the majority out there who are not weather-savvy in the least and consider TWC the last word on storms.  I predict this will be a flop at best, and a fiasco at worst.  May it cause no harm to any individual, that's all I can hope.
