Few people around now were around then. It's nice to not be hit by major hurricanes often, but then again no one has first hand experience of what a major hurricane would actually do to this area. (Things, as the slideshow on that page shows, have changed.)

I live between the 10.0 and 9.0 foot storm surge flags in this file on the first page:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/tbw/1921/StormSurge.pdf
I live where the 6.3 foot flag is between the two. Of course that is at low tide. At high tide, the next page, 12.7 feet.

I live about 8 to 9 feet above sea level. I live in an area that might possibly have a bit less storm surge than other areas if we had a hurricane like the one in 1921, the last major hurricane to impact our area.

However, I live across a canal from Rocky Point, which they talk about in slide 19 of that slideshow where someone died in 1921. They talk about 10 to 12 feet of surge, although that would probably be on the south side. I live on the north side of the land which is now more built up, slightly protecting my house some from storm surge probably due to the shape of the land.

Our area is still so low though. Three magnolia trees were planted across the street from my neighborhood several months ago and they all died. The reason they came up with is likely due to the high salt content. In storms the area floods due to the tide rising out of the storm drains and flooding the area with salt water. During normal conditions though, the salt water is still not far below ground level, meaning the roots have to probably deal with high salt water content even at high tide.
