I was looking into this from the 5am NHC discussion:

"There are some unconfirmed reports of
stronger winds at flight-level to the northeast of the center,
but I am waiting for the plane to go back to that area for
confirmation."

I assume this was what he was talking about last night:



And here was the peak 10s flight level wind of 64 knots, 74mph:



That was at 11:52pm EDT last night.

The plane did another center pass after that and flew back to base in that quadrant. It saw 30s flight level winds of 51 knots, 10s of 53 knots. Estimated 10s surface winds were about 46 knots.

I guess they didn't think it might representative at the time of the entire storm. But looking at it now, perhaps it showed the storm was strengthening more at the time, rather than an unrepresentative feature in a thunderstorm.
