Hey Skip, Pensacola Beach here, relatively low lying barrier island.  For us a storm is either the "evacuatable" (new word -  ha) type (basically any nearby or direct hit over Cat. 1, though we were even sent packing once for a Cat. 1), or else it's hunker down, close the hurricane shutters if need be, and don't worry much.  At the moment Irma looks like the latter for us at worst, but if things appear to be changing drastically in the next couple of days we'll make hotel reservations inland Alabama.

Had a generator when we first arrived here in 2000 but Hurricane Ivan carried it away in 2004 and we haven't replaced it, nor will we, as surge is our nemesis here.   Only real "prep" we'll be making at this point  -- since SO FAR we have no reason to expect more than a little wind and maybe rain from Irma -- is to make sure we have meds - refilling all on Thursday -- and water.  Always have non-perishable foods on  hand.  Also have been avoiding buying any frozen foods since last Thursday's shopping trip and will be eating from what frozen stuff we do have all this week.

Speaking of hotels, last time there was a serious evacuation of the peninsula, many folks ended up at the hotels here on Pensacola Beach, far western end of the panhandle.  Come on over if it comes to that!  Nice place to visit, friendly people, lots of restaurants.
