I have observed the same thing in many storms that have passed over very warm waters but failed to intensify because of EWRC, dry air or shear. I think we are seeing the latter here. Warm as those waters are, I think Irma will struggle to regain the more formidable structure she enjoyed farther east. Nonetheless, this will still be a powerful storm wherever it comes ashore, though I do think it matters that it seems less likely to do so at Cat 5. Some people say that is quibbling; I disagree. It matters. |
