State of emergency is normal

Declaring a state of emergency is more about having the ability to mobilize resources if they are needed. No matter how bad something could be, they are going to do that, often well in advance. Inland from me there was already places that were suffering flooding before the storm because of all the rain we had received earlier in the month. If we had received a lot more it would have been a lot worse.

Every storm is different. I wasn't following it too closely, but the strongest winds weren't over a very large area. This was more about the possibility of a lot of rain causing flooding and the wind knocking over some trees. People needed to stay out of the water (swimming, surfing and boats) and off the roads to avoid traffic accidents. There was a risk of tornadoes too. Often people die because of drowning, a tree falling either on a car or a house or traffic accidents from storms like this. People need to take the storms seriously. Not as seriously as a hurricane of course, but there are things you can easily avoid to not get hurt or killed in a storm such as this.

There will always be some dramatization in the media. Pay attention not to the dramatic parts as much as the actual info. When a meteorologist gets to the conditions you expect, not a reporter using cliches. If a meteorologist is being more dramatic, then pay more attention. We have good meteorologists around here that don't hype storms. Some other places might not be as lucky.

But don't ever apologize for asking a question here!
